How to Throw a Champagne Supernova Party

Champagne Supernova: a 90s Explosion

If you love the Oasis song Champagne Supernova, this party is for you. It was an epic hit during the 90s and remains a classic – enough so to warrant a Champagne Supernova party! While this theme is all about the song, you can make it a whole event – complete with champagne, of course. From Britpop to space imagery, let’s dive into some fun ideas for a cosmic throwback.

1. Create the Scene with Champagne Supernova Party Décor

Imagine a sky bursting with champagne – the result of a stellar explosion in the sky. That is the look you’re going for when you decorate for a Champagne Supernova party! Throw up metallic party decorations with a starstruck aesthetic. There are many fun finds in the space party post if you want to create a cosmic vibe.

While there are also plenty of champagne party decorations, I think the song’s aesthetic leans more toward an earth-to-universe vibe, journeying from the peaceful sounds of waves crashing against the shore to charged guitar riffs accompanying vocals that describe a galactic event. It’s less ‘pink bubbly and cheers’ and more ‘geographical phenomena’ like the dawn, the sky, the landslide, and the world spinning. Besides, there will be plenty of champagne for actual drinking!

2. Prepare a Champagne-Infused Menu

You’ll find several delicious champagne-focused recipes in the list below for a playful and thematic menu. Or, if you’re saving the bubbly solely for drinking, just serve whatever go-to party foods (keeping in consideration any guests’ dietary restrictions, as always). If you want to include supernova/space-themed dishes, check out some fun treats in the space party post.

Ultimately, whether you provide all of the food or whether you request that guests bring a dish to share, what really matters is that you serve champagne. After all, that’s part of what a Champagne Supernova party is all about! Be sure to stock up on champagne flutes (if you don’t have glass ones, you can find plenty of plastic champagne flutes – which are sturdy enough to keep for the next party, too!) and secure a champagne bucket or trusty cooler if you’ll be hosting outdoors (otherwise the frig will do) – and don’t forget the ice. Of course, provide plenty of hydrating drinks as well. Filtered water (or water bottles), sparkling waters, and juice/lemonade are all good options.

3. Prepare a Fun Champagne Supernova-Inspired Party Playlist

While you should naturally play Champagne Supernova (all 7½ minutes of it), you’ll also want to have other fun music that fits the theme! Other Oasis songs such as the Best of Oasis are a good choice. Of course, a Britpop playlist is equally fitting and provides more musician diversity. Or maybe you lean toward other mid-90s hits. Whatever you choose, have some fun with it and plan your playlist with some thought!

Preparation Checklist for Your Champagne Supernova in the Sky

Most of the following party preparation steps apply to any party you host. So while we covered Champagne Supernova-specific details and ideas above, below are basic planning guidelines to neatly order each step of the process (you can find more thorough details in the Best Party Practices posts):

1. First, confirm that people can come on any chosen date
  • Choose party date/time, and preferably alternative date(s) as well
  • Choose guest list and establish minimum number of guests you’d like (to make it worth your effort)
  • Six weeks out, confirm guests’ interest in the party and availability on chosen party date(s). The only details you’ll need to share at this time include what type of party it will be (Champagne Supernova-themed); any requested participation; party date and general time of day; and your address (or other location if elsewhere)
  • This first step is just to get people to confirm that, barring unforeseen circumstances, they are able and willing to attend and will save the date to do so. If your preferred minimum number of guests confirm interest and availability, have them secure the calendar date for your awesome party!

2. Then, proceed with the fun planning

Once you have your party date established, get out your calendar and map out when you plan to do every step of preparation. Party planning isn’t rocket science but it does require some thought and effort. So here’s an overview of what to do leading up to the party:

  • First, sit down and schedule time on your calendar for each step of party prep as listed below
  • Create invitations with all the details and send them out 4 weeks before the party
  • Order any party supplies and decorations 3 weeks out (so they arrive in time to set up)
  • Shop for champagne and any party supplies/decorations you don’t order online, as well as non-perishable food and drinks
  • Acquire perishable food early enough in advance to prepare in time
  • Set up decorations
  • Prepare food (depending on how long things keep)

3. Day of Party

It’s important to get as much party prep done far enough in advance that you have some time to yourself to relax come party day, especially if you’ve been busy. So be sure to plan your day-of-party preparations early enough to have that time to yourself as well. Within those amply planned/set-aside time slots, expect to do these preparations during the day of your party:

  • Complete any last-minute food prep with ingredients that are too fresh to do any earlier
  • Set up any quick/easy last-minute supplies and decorations (if not up already)
  • Prepare music and light candles
  • Get dressed in your favourite party outfit
  • Once everything’s ready, take some time for any preferred self-care activities that get you in a good head space so you can be a centered, charged, and happy host!
