How to Have a Magical Snow Party

Why Have a Snow Party?

The commonly known ‘holiday season’ is over. We’re well into January and the buzzing excitement of New Year’s has fizzled out. Employers are suddenly hustling into gear and expecting production to amp back up, though we all just want to hibernate from the cold. While these are all perfect ingredients for a mean seasonal depression cocktail, partying is the perfect antidote to keep our spirits refreshed and inspired. If you need a reason to throw a party, mid-winter presents plenty of themes and occasions, my friend. You need only notice the weather to find one of them. Though snow is loved by some and hated by others, everyone will enjoy the fun and levity of a snow party! Similar to a winter theme party, there really isn’t much to it other than enveloping your guests in the wintry magic of snow and having a good time together. Here we’ll cover the details for doing just that!

1. Turn Your Home Into an Enchanted Snowscape

You know you’ve decorated successfully when someone walks in and immediately senses they’re at a snow party. Turning your home into a fluffy wintry wonderland can be so much fun, especially when you delight in the look! While decorating can get pricy depending on how elaborate you get, you can usually find inexpensive party supplies if you know where to look. Timing plays a role, too. You can find great deals on ‘winter-themed’ Christmas decorations – or general winter season décor – just after Christmas is over. There are also plenty of ways to DIY your snow party décor. Buy a package of white printer paper and cut out paper snowflakes. They’re just as pretty and playful and easily fit the bill!

The easiest and most obvious way to create a snow theme in your home is to hang decorative snowflakes from the ceiling and doorways. Affix them to windows and walls. Honestly, no matter what materials or size, snowflakes create the primary effect. Another idea is to cover tables and countertops in artificial snow, whether you purchase some or DIY it with materials such as stuffing from bedding (any old comforters you don’t need anymore?). Be sure to scavenge some evergreens and other natural materials from outside to prop in the ‘snow’ in order to give it context (and so your guests don’t think a cat has torn apart a stuffed chair and strewn its innards everywhere). Hanging blue or white icicle lights or fairy lights can also add to the snowy enchantment! Opt for those with a cool light (whiter) as opposed to a warm light (yellower).

Assuming you are in fact hosting this party mid-winter, it should come as no surprise that most people probably won’t have much of an appetite for cold, snowy foods like sno-cones or icy smoothies. Unless you turn up your heat to a tropical temperature, people will more likely appreciate hearty winter fare. However, that doesn’t mean that some of your refreshments can’t be snow-related. Consider an easy one: ice cream. This is a simple desert you can provide in any flavours (vanilla most closely resembles snow) and most people enjoy it. If you and your guests indulge in libations, there are plenty of snowy cocktails you can craft as well. Consider icing snow-flake shaped sugar cookies in light blue and white (they aren’t just for Christmas!). Find plenty such recipes listed here:

3. Set the Ambience with a Snowy Playlist or Soundscape

Snow is light, delicate and pretty. To fit the vibe of a snow party, the music should be, too! That being said, anything will do – it’s really up to you so long as it isn’t dreadfully dramatic or earsplitting. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to music selection – just plan your snow party playlist/background music with a little thought! For generic feel-good music with a cute snowy scene, play this uplifting snowy music or this happy snowscape tract in the background.

4. Plan Snow Party Games or Activities

Party games are all about letting loose and having fun! While they aren’t necessarily required to make a great party, they can definitely make a more interesting and entertaining party! Structured fun is especially helpful for more introverted guests, or if intriguing conversations aren’t flowing as easily. Here are some printable snow-themed activities:

5. Establish Guest Participation

Guest participation is optional and depends on what kind of party you’re having and what sorts of things you’ll do/share. You could, for instance, request that guests BYOB or bring a dish to share. Just remember that as the host, you should always provide at least one hearty dish that is both tasty and filling (just in case others’ food is less substantial). Another example of guest participation is to request that everyone wear as much white as possible. This would create quite a dramatic visual affect, with everyone dressed in white against a white snowy-decorated space!
