How to Have a Vivid Green Themed Party

Green: A Colour That Invigorates and Inspires

Colours make a powerful impact, especially when we harness them in a way that really showcases their brilliance. Throwing a green themed party does such a thing: it casts everything in a mesmerizing green that people feel to their core. Green is invigorating. It’s the universal colour for life. It represents all green plants and healthy growth. As such, it’s both energizing and relaxing at the same time. It’s a happy colour! So if you love green, you can have a lot of fun working some green magic with this party. You’ll also find green in an enchanted forest theme party and a St. Patrick’s Day Themed Party, but here we focus solely on the amazing colour green.

How to Throw a Green Themed Party

1. Create a Green Scene

Turning your home into a green oasis is the most important part of hosting a green party. As with any colour-specific party, a green party is all about the environment. Most other details are flexible, but the look of your space is what makes a green themed party what it is. So you know you did it right when someone walks in and immediately knows they’re at a green party! You can have a lot of fun decorating, especially when you love the colour. While it can get pricy depending on how elaborate you get, you can usually find inexpensive party supplies, and with a little time and motivation you can DIY green party decorations.

Green Decorating Styles

There are several directions you can take with a green theme. One is a sleek, sexy, glowing green lit ambiance. Green light bulbs, whether in a lamp or as a strand of party lights, will add the most atmospheric touch here. Lofi music and electronic pop like Sneaker Pimps fit this feel. Hang wall art like an abstract green and black poster or an emerald green 1919 Bauhaus print. You’ll find some other fun and fitting decorations to suite this style in the checklist below as well.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you could take a Slytherin-style approach and fill plain glass bottles with green-coloured potions and hang sheer green fabric over your windows and doorways. Drape heavy green throw blankets over couches and chairs. Green vases and glasses add a stylish touch.

Another way to decorate green is to embrace the source of natural green: flora! Bring all your houseplants into your party room to create a living green space. Find swaths of ivy outside to string vines across your mantel, furniture, and door frames. Find evergreens growing naturally outside that you can trim and display in vases or hanging from the walls. Display green crystals (also of the earth) or lookalikes. Using salt lamps to light your space will cast a remarkable glow in this atmosphere.

2. Prepare Green Refreshments

It’s really easy to find plenty of green foods to share. Just look to the produce section! Prepare a big veggie plate full of greens like avocado, cucumbers, broccoli, celery, green bell peppers, green olives, and sugar snap peas. Slice up some green fruits to create a spread with kiwi, honeydew melon, green grapes, green apples, and pears. With a couple of tasty dipping sauces you have very healthy and plentiful appetizers.

Here are a few other fun green dishes and drinks:

It’s easy to spend a lot on food. If you want to keep it thrifty, you can request that guests bring a green dish or drink to share. Most people are happy to contribute (see 4. Guest Participation). Just make sure you are aware of any invited guests’ dietary restrictions and provide at least a couple decent food/drink options that they can enjoy.

3. Set the Ambience with the Perfect Playlist

Background music is key for a party’s vibe. And this is a party where anything goes! If you’re having a dance party where music is part of the main attraction, you’ll of course amp up a killer playlist. If you want people to be able to have a conversation without shouting over their drinks, keep the volume low enough or play music that’s more laid back. You could also include visual with green background loops on the screen to accompany the music, or play a green lofi video in the background. Ultimately, your choice of tunes depends on what you and your friends like – and what ‘feels green’ to you!

4. Establish Guest Participation

Guest participation is optional and involves how you’d like your guests to participate or contribute to your party. As mentioned above, you could request that guests bring a dish to share, green potluck-style. You may make it BYOB. An easy idea for a green themed party is to invite guests to dress in green. Whatever you choose, just communicate it when you initially invite people.

Preparation Checklist for Your Green Themed Party

Most of these steps for party preparation apply to any type of party you host. So while we covered the atmospheric details above, here are basic party planning guidelines to neatly order each step of the process (you can find more thorough details in the Best Party Practices posts):

1. First, confirm that people can come on any chosen date
  • Choose party date/time, and preferably alternative date(s) as well
  • Choose guest list and establish minimum number of guests you’d like (to make it worth your effort)
  • Six weeks out, confirm guests’ interest in the party and availability on chosen party date(s). The only details you’ll need to share at this time include what type of party it will be (green-themed); any requested participation (i.e. potluck, etc.); party date and general time of day (i.e. evening, etc.); and where (your address, or other location if applicable)
  • This first step is just to get people to confirm that, barring unforeseen circumstances, they are able and willing to attend and will save the date to do so. If your preferred minimum number of guests confirm interest and availability, have them secure the calendar date for your awesome green party!

2. Then, proceed with the fun planning

Once you have your green themed party date established, you first need to get out your calendar and map out when you plan to do every step of preparation. This means you schedule time for each preparation activity that you need to do. Party planning doesn’t have to be complicated, but it requires some thought and effort (and people will notice). Here’s an overview of what you can expect to do leading up to the party:

  • First, sit down and schedule time on your calendar for each step of party prep as listed below
  • Create invitations with all the details and send them out 4 weeks before the party
  • Order any party supplies and decorations 3 weeks out (so they arrive in time to set up)
  • Shop for any party supplies/decorations you don’t order online, as well as non-perishable food/drinks
  • DIY any party supplies and decorations
  • Acquire perishable food/drinks early enough in advance to prepare in time
  • Set up decorations
  • Prepare food/drinks (depending on how long things keep)

3. Day of Party

It’s important to get as much party prep done far enough in advance that you have some time to yourself to relax come party day, especially if you’ve been busy. So be sure to plan your day-of-party preparations early enough to have that time and space to yourself as well. Within those amply planned/set-aside time slots, you’ll do these preparations during the day of your party:

  • Complete any last-minute food/drink prep that are too fresh to do any earlier
  • Set up any quick/easy last-minute supplies and decorations (if not up already)
  • Prepare audio/visual
  • Get dressed in your favourite green party outfit
  • Once everything’s ready, take the time to do any preferred self-care activities that get you in a good head space if you aren’t already. You want to be a relaxed, energized, and happy host!

All Set to Host a Mesmerizing Green Themed Party

Every part of the party planning process is meant to be enjoyable – from planning the menu to putting up decorations (and if you really love green, consider decking out your home in an emerald green aesthetic). The way to be a good host is to put thought and care into party preparation while also keeping a flexible approach that allows grace for unexpected surprises. At the end of the day, the goal is for you and your guests to have a good time – even if that looks different than you envisioned. So enjoy the process and party on!
