How to Host a Blissful Blue Party

Everybody Loves a Brilliant Blue

No colour soothes us quite like blue. Relaxing may seem like the antidote to your typical party but chilling out with others is actually a welcoming experience when the environment feels serene and inspiring. That’s the vibe you achieve when you bathe your space in blue. A blue party is a nice escape from a world full of bright lights and busy noise. It’s a mellow container for everyone to recharge and socialize in a cool atmosphere. Here we’ll cover how to create this experience so you can host your own blissful blue party!

How to Throw a Blue Party

1. Bathe Your Space in Blue with Blue Lighting and Décor

As with any colour-specific party, a blue party is all about the look. Most other details are flexible, but the look of your space is what makes a blue party what it is. You know you’ve decorated successfully when someone walks in and immediately knows they’re at a blue party!

Setting a serene blue scene is the most fun step of party prep (see Preparation Checklist for Your Blue Theme Party below). Simply occupying yourself with the creative act of decorating in blue provides a comforting sense of pleasure. You basically want to envelope your surrounding environment in blue. Hang blue fringe banners across the ceiling or entryways, and let blue foil fringe curtains drape against the wall or as a fun entry point in a doorway. Scatter metallic blue confetti on a table or other display area. Decorations can sometimes get pricy depending on how elaborate you get, but you can also find inexpensive party supplies in several places.

An elegant way to frame doorways or passageways is to gather royal blue sheer fabric as an asymmetrical curtain at the top to frame the opening in blue. Or create a billowy look by draping sky blue sheer fabric from the ceiling with the corners pinned up. It’s also easy to showcase simple blue household décor items like blue throw pillows for a soft colour pop.

By far the best way to instantly create a laid back blue vibe is with blue lights. Here are a few you can use to cast a beautiful mellow glow:

2. Prepare Refreshments and Blue Party Treats

Not many foods are naturally blue. You’ve got blueberries…and that’s about it as far as conventionally available foods go! Unless you want your guests to turn into Willy Wonka’s Violet after eating mounds of blueberries, be sure to provide a healthy variety of other foods. Consider popular party platters like blue tortilla chips and guacamole (okay there’s another blue food), a cheese board, bean salad, or other such plates. If you prefer, you can keep food costs low by inviting guests to BYOB and/or bring a dish to share. Most people are happy to contribute (see 5. Guest Participation). Either way, always be aware of any invited guests’ dietary restrictions and provide at least one or two decent food/drink options for them as well. And remember to provide fun blue tableware!

3. Set a Blue Ambience with a Chill Playlist

Background music is key for a party’s vibe. And a blue party vibe is all about hanging out with laid back beats. Any genre with that’s relaxing will do! There is no one-size-fits-all for your choice of audio so long as it waxes blue. Jazz, hip hop, ambient, instrumental, pop – all have their smooth versions. To add a blue visual component, choose from many pleasant lofi tracts such as a blue sky lofi ambiance.

4. Add Evocative Scents

We covered the sights, flavors, and sounds of a blue party. Now consider using the evocative sense of smell to fully immerse your guests in blue! Here are a few scented candles that will both cast an attractive light and fill your space with an enticing aroma:

5. Establish Guest Participation

Guest participation is optional and depends on how you’d like your guests to participate or contribute to your party. One way you can invite your guests to participate in a blue party is to wear all blue. That shouldn’t be too difficult as most people own several garments in blue (blue jeans, navy suits, etc.)! You can also invite guests to bring a blue dish or drink to share and make a contest of it. Have a prize for whoever brings the tastiest dish/drink and another prize for whoever brings the most creative one. Whatever type of participation you request, just be sure to include such details when you initially invite your guests!

1. First, confirm that people can come on any chosen date:
  • Choose party date/time, and preferably alternative date(s) as well
  • Choose guest list and establish minimum number of guests you’d like (to make it worth your effort)
  • Six weeks out, confirm guests’ interest in the party and availability on chosen party date(s)
  • If your preferred minimum number of guests confirm interest and availability, have them secure calendar date for your awesome blue party!
2. Then, proceed with the fun planning:
  • Schedule time on your calendar for each step of party prep (securing and/or making food/drinks, etc.)
  • Create invitations with all the details and send them out 4 weeks before the party
  • Order any party supplies and decorations 3 weeks out (so they arrive in time to prepare and set up)
  • Shop for any party supplies/decorations you don’t order online, as well as non-perishable food/drinks
  • In your planned time slots, acquire perishable food/drinks early enough in advance to prepare in time
  • In your planned time slots, set up decorations
  • In your planned time slots, prepare food/drinks (depending on how long things keep)

3. Day of Party (in your amply planned time slot):
  • Prepare any foods/drinks that are too fresh to do any earlier
  • Set up any quick/easy last-minute supplies and decorations (if not up already)
  • Prepare ambience (audio/visual, candles)
  • Get dressed in your blue party outfit
  • Once everything’s ready, meditate or do any preferred self-care to get in a good head space if you aren’t already. You want to be a relaxed, centered, and enthusiastic host – both for your own peace and enjoyment and for your guests, who will pick up on the contagiously good vibe you emit! A blue party is low key so put sufficient effort into planning and preparing, but also take it easy, enjoy the process, and go with the blue flow!
