Easter is a beautiful time of year when everyone is celebrating spring and enjoying the changing weather. From a historic and symbolic view, it’s arguably the most important holiday of the Christian religion. In addition, the timing of Easter coincides with the ancient celebration of spring called Ostara and that is where we get Easter’s cheerful symbols like baby chicks, bunnies and eggs. Whether you embrace Easter’s religious traditions and the holy week or whether you simply enjoy its broader Ostara-based manifestations, hosting an Easter party is a simple and delightful way to gather friends for a happy celebration! Here we’ll cover decorating ideas, tasty food recipes, and more things you can do.

How to Throw an Easter Party

Pastels are your friend when decorating for an Easter party! But you aren’t tied to that colour palette – you can opt for a more neutral/natural look, or even brighter colours. And while buying Easter-themed decorations is fun (plenty of great options below!), you can just as easily fill your home with freshly cut (or potted) flowers. Lots of beautiful flowers – whether picked wild or store-bought – are the most timeless and fragrant décor by far. Any kind of seasonal greenery is likewise lovely. A wicker basket of actual grass from the yard can make a fresh and seasonal centerpiece. The earth provides plenty of its own beauty to adorn your home.

If you’re strapped for cash, it’s easy to decorate for Easter on the cheap. Go to any dollar store and you’ll find plenty of inexpensive party supplies like plastic Easter eggs, Easter grass, Easter baskets, tinsel garland, and more. But if you’re looking for things that are more original (and maybe less plastic), Etsy vendors craft a lot of beautiful hand-made decorations that are both classy and fairly inexpensive (see list below). Plus, if you set aside the time, you can dye your own Easter eggs. This is a fun craft that also forces you to cook egg-based meals (a delicious and healthy source of protein – see recipes in the next section below)!

1. Now, here are the things you need to do to prepare for your Easter party. First, confirm that people can come on any chosen date:
  • Choose party date/time, and preferably alternative date(s) as well. Easter Sunday always occurs after the first full moon on or after the Spring Equinox, which means we celebrate Easter as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th. In 2024, Easter falls on March 31st. While Easter Sunday seems like the best day for an Easter party, many people may already have plans to attend church events or gather with family. The Saturday before Easter, therefore, may be a much easier date for most of your guests to attend.
  • Choose guest list and establish minimum number of guests you’d like (to make it worth your effort)
  • Six weeks out, confirm guests’ interest in the party and availability on chosen party date(s)
  • If your preferred minimum number of guests confirm interest and availability, have them secure calendar date for your awesome Easter party!

2. Then, proceed with the fun planning:
  • Schedule time on your calendar for each step of party prep (securing and/or making food/drinks, etc.)
  • Create invitations with all the details and send them out 4 weeks before the party
  • Order any party supplies and decorations 3 weeks out (so they arrive in time to prepare and set up)
  • Shop for any party supplies/decorations you don’t order online, as well as non-perishable food/drinks

3. Day of Party (in your amply planned time slot):
  • Prepare any foods/drinks that are too fresh to do any earlier
  • Set up any quick/easy last-minute supplies and decorations (if not up already)
  • Prepare ambience (audio/visual, candles/scents)
  • Get dressed in your favourite Easter party outfit. Pastels best suit this holiday, but ultimately you should wear whatever makes you feel happiest and most confident!
  • Once everything’s ready, meditate or do any preferred self-care to get in a good head space if you aren’t already. You want to be a relaxed, energized, and happy host – both for yourself and for your guests, who will pick up on your contagiously good vibe and automatically be happier as well!
