How to Host a Tropical Island Party

Island Life for the Win

If you can’t go to a tropical island anytime soon, the next best thing you can do is host your own tropical island party! Unlike a Caribbean themed party, an island party isn’t tied to any one geographical location but encompasses any tropical island circling the world. From Fiji to Hawaii to the Maldives, the places and cultures are diverse, but they all share universally desirable landscapes and amazing biodiversity. Tourists are drawn to these places for a reason: they are incredibly rich and vibrant with lush foliage, gorgeous beaches, and that tropical sun. So grab a cocktail and get ready to plan a delightful island party!

How to Throw a Tropical Island Party

1. Create the Scene with Island Decorations

If at all possible, host your tropical island party outside! Ideally the weather cooperates and you have a hot and sunny day. However, always have a plan B to move the party indoors if the weather turns wet. So even if you have everything set up to host outside, make sure your indoor space is also compatible for the amount of guests you’ll host with plenty of seating options and places for food. Otherwise, definitely take advantage of the summer heat and have the party outdoors. If you aren’t already accustomed to hosting outdoor parties, check out the patio party post for more details on things you need for adequate seating, shade, and food setup. If you have a pool, that’s even better! But don’t worry if you don’t have access to an outdoor space or pool. Even in wintertime, you can live it up island style indoors, too!

You’ll know you’ve decorated successfully when someone walks in and feels like they’re on a tropical island. There are many things that evoke an island party vibe: coconuts, palm trees, pineapples, parrots, colourful seashells and coral, colourful fish and other tropical marine life, tropical flowers, etc. If you already have any tropical houseplants such as palms or dracaena (or any houseplants, for that matter), bring them front and center to add a natural island vibe. 2. Prepare Tropical Refreshments

Time to plan an island party menu! Whether you provide all refreshments or whether you invite guests to bring a dish or drink potluck-style, food is one of the best ways to engage everyone in an island party through their sense of taste. And don’t forget the tropical cocktails! These also make some of the best mocktails so every guest can enjoy the delicious flavour combinations. For irresistible blended drinks to enjoy virgin or spiked, check out plenty of amazing smoothie recipes in the summer fruit party post.

An island party is the time for island music! You have many enjoyable options here. Play instrumental background music like Hawaiian luau music or tropical-inspired music. Or create a Maldives-inspired vibe with Maldivian Boduberu songs! Play this fun Pacific Island playlist in true island party spirit. Or play any of these fantastic island musicians:

4. Add Evocative Scents

We covered the sights, the flavors, and the sounds of a tropical island party. Now, complete the tropical island vibe with scents! To truly immerse your guests in the tropics, engage the evocative sense of smell by burning any of these delicious tropical-inspired candles:

5. Plan Island Games

If your island party vibe itself isn’t enough to shake off any guest’s lingering workweek/life stress, games are a great way to give the stressed brain a break by forcing it into new mental processes that are more fun (and productive)! Ain’t no time to talk shop when someone’s challenged to ‘Think Fast.’ Download and print out any of these island-themed digital games for your guests to enjoy:

6. Establish Guest Participation

Guest participation is optional and depends on how you’d like your guests to participate or contribute to your party. Perhaps you invite guests to wear their most tropical outfit. Grass skirts and leis encouraged! Maybe you also invite everyone to bring an island-themed dish or drink to share, which is a great way to keep food costs down (not to mention food prep/cooking time). It’s completely up to you, but whatever participation invitation you extend, just make sure you communicate that information when you initially invite guests.

1. First, confirm that people can come on any chosen date:
  • Choose party date/time, and preferably alternative date(s) as well
  • Choose guest list and establish minimum number of guests you’d like (to make it worth your effort)
  • Six weeks out, confirm guests’ interest in the party and availability on chosen party date(s)
  • If your preferred minimum number of guests confirm interest and availability, have them secure calendar date for your awesome island party!
2. Then, proceed with the fun planning:
  • Schedule time on your calendar for each step of party prep as listed below (securing and/or making food/drinks, etc.)
  • Create invitations with all the details and send them out 4 weeks before the party
  • Order any party supplies and decorations 3 weeks out (so they arrive in time to prepare and set up)
  • Shop for any party supplies/decorations you don’t order online, as well as non-perishable food/drinks
  • In your planned time slots, acquire perishable food/drinks early enough in advance to prepare in time
  • In your planned time slots, set up decorations
  • In your planned time slots, prepare food/drinks (depending on how long things keep)
3. Day of Party (in your amply planned time slot):
  • Prepare any foods/drinks that are too fresh to do any earlier
  • Set up any quick/easy last-minute supplies and decorations (if not up already)
  • Prepare ambience (music, candles)
  • Get dressed in a carefree island party outfit
  • Once everything’s ready, meditate or do any preferred self-care to get in a good head space if you aren’t already. You want to be a relaxed, energized, and happy host – both for yourself and for your guests, who will pick up on your contagiously good island vibe and automatically be happier as well!

Every part of the party planning process is meant to be enjoyable – from planning the menu to putting up decorations. The way to be a good host is to put thought and care into party preparation while also keeping a flexible approach that allows grace for unexpected changes. An island vibe is carefree, so don’t take things too seriously. And when you host an island party – even if it’s during the colder time of year – it will feel bright and sunny when you fill your space with good friends, good music, good food, and good laughs!
